Ottawa Student Jobs at Transport Canada

Finding quality and experiential Ottawa student jobs can be very hard to find. However, based on my experience I can definitely say that Transport Canada provides excellent work opportunities for students.

Background Information on Transport Canada

Transport Canada is a federal institution that is responsible for transportation policies and programs all over Canada (About Transport Canada, 2019). In fact, Transport’s Portfolio is made up of 53 organizations making it one of the largest and most diverse portfolios in the federal government (The Transport Canada Portfolio, 2019). Transport Canada’s mission is to serve the public interest through the promotion of a safe and secure, efficient, and environmentally responsible transportation system in Canada (About Transport Canada, 2019). To add on, Transport Canada employs about 5,800 people at its headquarters and in five regional offices across the country (About Transport Canada, 2019).

My Experience

Now, the program I specifically worked for is called the Transportation and Infrastructure Programs – Project, Results, and Resources Management (AHSC). This program provides support to the Director-General and the directors of 5 other programs for issues management, human resource requests, finance, and reporting activities. My job title was Financial Administrative Support Assistant. The majority of my tasks revolved around financial duties such as processing claims and budgeting.

With that being said, I entered this job with very few technical skills, especially in terms of Microsoft Excel which is crucial for a job in the field of finances. Nonetheless, my supervisors were very helpful in terms of training. We would have weekly training sessions on Microsoft Teams where they would share their screens while performing a task and I would follow along on my end. This was very helpful, as I was able to get concrete hands-on experience while learning at the same time. Furthermore, my team was always available whenever I had any questions and they encouraged students to ask a lot of questions so that we could learn as much as possible.

To be more precise, Transport Canada’s goal is to provide students with as many skills and as much training as possible so that they can eventually get a job with them or someone else. This is evident as Transport Canada provides free courses on finances, business technology, technical writing, and more. I was able to take these types of courses during my free time and they were definitely very helpful. The courses were very easy to follow along and they were filled with different types of exercises and examples. I could not emphasize enough how much these courses have helped me in terms of developing the skills on my resume. Lastly, Transport Canada recognizes the hard work of students, so if you put in the work then you may even get the opportunity of gaining a permanent job after graduation. Luckily, I got this opportunity and I could not be more thankful.

All in all, working with Transport Canada is a great jumpstart for young careers in business, so please don’t waste any time and start applying for student internships at Transport Canada by clicking the link below. I can assure you that by doing this you will begin the process of opening many doors to success.
